What’s coral ?
Despite the fact that they look like plants or stones, corals are animals. They are invertebrates, which belong to the Phylum Cnidaria including hard corals and
soft, the sea fans, hydroids, jellyfish and other sea anemones.
Each block of coral is composed of a number of identical individuals: the polyps. They have the shape of a bag with a single orifice, a central mouth used to feed and remove waste, and a crown of stinging tentacles (“Cnidos” which means stinging in Greek).
